Who is Dearica Hamby?

Dearica Hamby is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Atlanta Dream of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Dearica Hamby is one of the best female basketball players in the world. Dearica Hamby is a WNBA champion who plays for the Washington Mystics. You may know Dearica as the player who won the WNBA championship with the Minnesota Lynx. But that’s just one piece of this remarkable athlete’s story. Dearica started playing basketball at a young age, and she was soon noticed for her talent. In high school, she was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Mississippi—and she went on to play for Georgia Tech.

She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and started playing basketball at the age of three. Hamby attended Marian High School, where she played on their varsity basketball team for four years. She was named a McDonald’s All-American in 2010 and was selected to play for Team USA at the U17 World Championship in Amsterdam, Netherlands that same year. In 2011, she earned Indiana’s Miss Basketball honor. Hamby played college basketball at South Carolina University before transferring to Virginia Tech University after her freshman season. Her career began in 2012 when she was drafted by the WNBA. In her first season, she averaged 2.4 points per game and 1.2 rebounds per game for the San Antonio Silver Stars. She also made 41% of her shots from the field and 28% of her shots from beyond the arc.

Hamby began her college career at the University of South Carolina, where she averaged 19.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a freshman. She then transferred to Virginia Tech, where she averaged 17.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game as a sophomore in 2018 before declaring for the draft. She was drafted by the Dream in the second round of the 2018 WNBA draft and has since been named to the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game as a replacement for Nia Coffey. Dearica Hamby is a WNBA champion, and she’s making her mark on the game.
