In the first season of the MLS in 1996, the Colorado Rapids were amongst the initial teams added. They are based in Commerce City, Colorado, and play at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, where they lifted the MLS Cup in 2010. One of the first teams to join MLS was Sporting KC in 1996. When they first began, they went by the name Kansas City Wizards, but in 2010, they changed their moniker. Sporting KC lifted the US Open Cup in 2004, 2012, 2015, and 2017. They play at Children’s Mercy Park and won the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013.
2018 saw the debut of LAFC in the MLS under the direction of former USA national team head coach Bob Bradley. They have been a successful team since their inception, although they have yet to claim an MLS Cup.
You can catch their games at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. In addition, the Sounders joined Major League Soccer in 2009 as an expansion team. They compete at Lumen Field, and in 2016 and 2019, they took home two MLS Cups. Since their debut season, they have eleven times made the MLS playoffs. In its inaugural year, 1996, FC Dallas joined the MLS. Despite being in second place in 2010, they still haven’t won an MLS Cup. FC Dallas, however, has two US Open Cup victories in 1997 and 2016. Since 2005, they have had their games at the Toyota Stadium. After relocating to Houston, Tx, from San Jose, Ca, the Houston Dynamo joined MLS soccer in 2006. They are known as the “Orange Crush” and play at PNC Stadium. In 2006 and 2007, they won the MLS Cup, and in 2018, they also won the US Open Cup.
In 2005, Real Salt Lake was an expansion team in the MLS. Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, serves as their home field. In addition to winning the MLS Cup in 2009, they also finished second in 2013. As an expansion team in 2011, the Portland Timbers joined Major League Soccer. Being the first MLS team in Cascadia to achieve so, they won the MLS Cup in 2015. Additionally, they triumphed in the 2020 MLS is Back competition. In Portland’s downtown Providence Park, they hold their games.
