Syracuse Men’s Basketball head coach, Jim Boeheim, said that the ACC Tournament should be moved away from North Carolina.

The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament has traditionally been played in Greensboro, North Carolina. Boeheim, whose Syracuse Orangemen recently moved out of the Big East into the ACC, does not believe that it is an optimal site. Because the ACC added Syracuse and Pittsburgh, they have been experimenting with playing the tournament in more northeastern locations. Last year they held the tournament in Washington, D.C. The Big Ten, which added Maryland from the ACC and Rutgers from the Big East, also attempted to grow its presence in the Northeast region, holding its tournament in Washington, D.C. and Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Syracuse lost to Miami 62 to 57 on Wednesday in the first round of the 2017 ACC Tournament held in Brooklyn, New York. A reporter asked Boeheim about being able to play the tournament in his home state of New York.

“There’s no reason to play in Greensboro,” Boeheim said. “The only reason they play there is because the league offices are there, it’s always been there and there are like 150 people who like to have meetings. It should not be there.”

According to Boeheim, making use of bigger markets and bigger recruiting centers is the only smart play for the ACC.

“The media centers, the recruiting centers are Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and New York,” reasoned Boeheim. “How many good players are in Greensboro? New York made the Big East.”
